Symphony for Nature: The Britt Orchestra at Crater Lake Previous Broadcasts

KQED Plus: Sun, Jul 29, 2018 -- 6:30 PM

This program documents an extraordinary musical experience at the edge of Oregon's Crater Lake, known as giiwas to the Klamath Tribes. More than 130 musicians - including classical musicians and Klamath drummers - gathered at Crater Lake National Park in July 2016 to perform the world premiere of a powerful new score inspired by the legendary lake. "Natural History," composed over the course of a year by Michael Gordon, was performed by members of the Britt Orchestra, the Klamath drum group Steiger Butte Singers, a choir, and community brass and percussion groups. With just a few days to rehearse together, the diverse ensemble converged under the direction of conductor, Teddy Abrams. The program is both a story about the creative process culminating in the performances and a window into a place rich with spiritual and historical significance.
