Veterans Coming Home: Women in the Military (Episode #210)

KQED World: Tue, Nov 28, 2017 -- 7:00 AM

America has 165,000 women enlisted and active, and an additional 35, 000 serving as officers - but our female soldiers are still fighting a battle of perception. Five shorts from the Veterans Coming Home Project looks at women in the military. From Nashville Public Television, WIFE, MOTHER, SOLDIER is the story of a female vet who held the line on the battlefield while her civilian husband held the line at home. FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE TEAM profiles an Army veteran and recruiter who missed the close bonds of military service - then found that camaraderie in the all-female sport of roller derby. From Wisconsin Public Television, PEACEFULLY ORGANIC looks at the difficult struggle many soldiers face in transitioning back to civilian life. In AMERICA'S FUNNIEST VETS ARE SERIOUS ABOUT SERVICE, a veteran uses comedy to share her story, including the harassment she endured in the military. And ON THE HOME FRONT reflects on the career of an Army intelligence officer who received a Bronze star for her military service - a recognition that doesn't always translate to the civilian world, especially for female veterans.

Veterans Coming Home: Military/Civilian Divide (Episode #208)

KQED World: Tue, Nov 14, 2017 -- 7:00 AM

Four documentary shorts from the Veterans Coming Home project look at the military-civilian divide in America. "Recruiting in Times Square" goes inside the recruitment process, and the unlikely candidates who enlist, including new Americans. "From War to the Happiest Place on Earth" features an Army veteran who has a picture perfect life and job but wrestles with the demons of post-traumatic stress disorder. "Invisible Wounds" explores the trauma of military sexual assault, and one survivor who seeks justice and healing. And it's not easy being a queer pacifist Vietnam veteran in "LGBT Rights and Vets for Peace." These stories reflect the diverse post-war experience of our veterans, as civilians ask how we can truly support our troops.

"A Veteran Fights Homelessness in San Francisco" is one man's personal mission to help vets with no place to call home - a reality he knows all too well.
And in "Veteran's Bond", the powerful ties soldiers have to one another, from two Afghanistan veterans who reconnect years after combat.
These stories reveal the continuing courage of our veterans long after military service ends.
