He went all around Mexico, Argentina, Chile, but I could tell that his favorite place to go was Brazil. The man loves a city; how could he not love Rio de Janeiro?\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>These were work trips and I never got to go, but I did benefit in one crucial way: he brought back VHS tapes purchased in Brazil of Carnaval, the annual festival that makes Mardi Gras look like a Fourth of July parade in a small town. For a kid growing up in Reagan-Bush I-era America, Carnaval in Rio was otherworldly. Not only was everyone seemingly at least half naked, but there was so much dancing, so many kinds of people and bodies, so much partying, so much fun.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>Of course, San Francisco has Carnaval, too—coming up May 23-24. It’s not quite the same, but it is extremely fun. For the last several years, my dancer daughter has paraded with \u003ca href=\"https://www.instagram.com/blocogingabrasil/\">Bloco Ginga Brasil\u003c/a>, as one of the little girls at the front. She loves it, but what she loves even more is the community that Ginga Brasil and a set of associated Brazilian institutions like \u003ca href=\"https://brasarte.com/\">BrasArte\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"https://blocodosolsanjose.com/home\">Bloco de Sol San Jose\u003c/a> bring together.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>This last weekend, these crews gathered for a Carnaval fundraiser at \u003ca href=\"https://lapena.org/\">La Peña\u003c/a>, the Latin cultural center in south Berkeley. Bloco Ginga Brasil is now led by Tainah Damasceno, daughter of the legendary Brazilian culture keeper, Conceição Damasceno. Conceição grew up in Bahia, in the center of Afro-Indigenous culture in Brazil. She met Tainah’s father, Nick, in Florida, and they made their way to Berkeley in the 1980s.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>By 1989, she had begun to found a constellation of Brazilian organizations, gathering people officially and unofficially around dance and music. The musician John Santos \u003ca href=\"https://www.berkeleyside.org/2022/08/30/conceicao-damasceno-remembrance-casa-de-cultura-brasarte-lavagem\">told Berkeleyside\u003c/a> that her arrival “caused a sensation around the community.” Santos’s wife, the writer Aida Salazar, was another friend and admirer. She \u003ca href=\"https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Conceic-o-Damasceno-dance-instructor-and-the-17151033.php\">told the \u003cem>San Francisco Chronicle\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, “her genius is something she brought from Brazil.”\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>All the way back in 2003, \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rEGPwPhOks\">KQED Spark produced a segment about Conceição\u003c/a> that I just love. I never got to meet her, as she’d died of complication from lupus by the time my daughter was introduced to samba through a friend’s sister. I’d heard many stories from people about how magnetic she was, and the video clearly shows that charisma and grace.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>The thing I love best, for my own daughter, is the way that the women of Bloco Ginga Brasil model power \u003cem>and\u003c/em> sisterhood. At the fundraiser, performances alternated with dance sessions. This being the East Bay, just about every ethnic and racial identity was represented on that dance floor, paying homage to these gorgeous Afro-Indigenous traditions from the coast of Brazil. As my ten-year-old stood gently swaying near the outside of the women’s dance circle, a powerful, tall woman in red pants with a huge mane of curly hair swept her into the mix, and there she stayed, challenged and protected by this whole array of women. Everybody (and every body) united in sweat and joy.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>My daughter does a lot of forms of dance and I love them all. We get to be a part of institutions like \u003ca href=\"https://www.shawl-anderson.org/\">Shawl Anderson Dance Center\u003c/a>, which is the one of the longest running arts organizations in Berkeley. But I don’t think she’ll ever give up samba. Conceição seems like one of those people who was free, somehow, and she used that power to show others how to free themselves. To watch the dancers, to feel that dance floor’s vibrations, to be a part of that community is such a gift. It’s not quite the same, but it is extremely fun. For the last several years, my dancer daughter has paraded with \u003ca href=\"https://www.instagram.com/blocogingabrasil/\">Bloco Ginga Brasil\u003c/a>, as one of the little girls at the front. She loves it, but what she loves even more is the community that Ginga Brasil and a set of associated Brazilian institutions like \u003ca href=\"https://brasarte.com/\">BrasArte\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"https://blocodosolsanjose.com/home\">Bloco de Sol San Jose\u003c/a> bring together.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>This last weekend, these crews gathered for a Carnaval fundraiser at \u003ca href=\"https://lapena.org/\">La Peña\u003c/a>, the Latin cultural center in south Berkeley. Bloco Ginga Brasil is now led by Tainah Damasceno, daughter of the legendary Brazilian culture keeper, Conceição Damasceno. Conceição grew up in Bahia, in the center of Afro-Indigenous culture in Brazil. She met Tainah’s father, Nick, in Florida, and they made their way to Berkeley in the 1980s.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>By 1989, she had begun to found a constellation of Brazilian organizations, gathering people officially and unofficially around dance and music. The musician John Santos \u003ca href=\"https://www.berkeleyside.org/2022/08/30/conceicao-damasceno-remembrance-casa-de-cultura-brasarte-lavagem\">told Berkeleyside\u003c/a> that her arrival “caused a sensation around the community.” Santos’s wife, the writer Aida Salazar, was another friend and admirer. She \u003ca href=\"https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Conceic-o-Damasceno-dance-instructor-and-the-17151033.php\">told the \u003cem>San Francisco Chronicle\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, “her genius is something she brought from Brazil.”\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>All the way back in 2003, \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rEGPwPhOks\">KQED Spark produced a segment about Conceição\u003c/a> that I just love. I never got to meet her, as she’d died of complication from lupus by the time my daughter was introduced to samba through a friend’s sister. I’d heard many stories from people about how magnetic she was, and the video clearly shows that charisma and grace.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>The thing I love best, for my own daughter, is the way that the women of Bloco Ginga Brasil model power \u003cem>and\u003c/em> sisterhood. At the fundraiser, performances alternated with dance sessions. This being the East Bay, just about every ethnic and racial identity was represented on that dance floor, paying homage to these gorgeous Afro-Indigenous traditions from the coast of Brazil. As my ten-year-old stood gently swaying near the outside of the women’s dance circle, a powerful, tall woman in red pants with a huge mane of curly hair swept her into the mix, and there she stayed, challenged and protected by this whole array of women. Everybody (and every body) united in sweat and joy.\u003c/p>\r\n\u003cp>My daughter does a lot of forms of dance and I love them all. We get to be a part of institutions like \u003ca href=\"https://www.shawl-anderson.org/\">Shawl Anderson Dance Center\u003c/a>, which is the one of the longest running arts organizations in Berkeley. But I don’t think she’ll ever give up samba. Conceição seems like one of those people who was free, somehow, and she used that power to show others how to free themselves. To watch the dancers, to feel that dance floor’s vibrations, to be a part of that community is such a gift. When you live on the northern side of the East Bay, anything on the other side of the Peninsula feels \u003cem>so\u003c/em> far away.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>But then, one day, in fact this past Saturday, we hopped in the car in West Oakland on a Saturday afternoon and an hour and a half later, we were at the beach. And by beach, I don’t mean Crown Beach in Alameda or Keller Beach in Point Richmond, I am talking about a beach-beach, an am-I-in-Los-Angeles beach. Santa Cruz, man, what a surprise.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>I was there because my 12-year-old and I had been talking about doing a big hike for months. Neither of us likes camping, but we love hiking. So, we’d been talking about doing some kind of \u003ca href=\"https://www.outsideonline.com/adventure-travel/destinations/best-hut-to-hut-hikes/\">hut-to-hut hike\u003c/a>, or as it was more likely to be, a hotel-to-hotel hike.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>I’d promised we’d set a date and then make it happen. But, as things go, we could not really clear two days to do such a thing between afterschool activities and work stuff and family stuff. So: we took our ambitions down a notch and settled on a long hike at Wilder Ranch, just north of Santa Cruz.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Neither of us really “does beach,” so we headed out of town to our hotel pretty quickly. I’d booked a room at the \u003ca href=\"https://www.davenportroadhouse.com/\">Davenport Roadhouse\u003c/a>, a fantastic old place that seems like it’s trying to combine the old Santa Cruz Mountains vibe with the newer “cool tech family moves to small town” reality. When we arrived, there were DJs playing to a hip crowd, well-attired small children scattered about the large back yard. Inside, three seasoned blues musicians were setting up to play. The \u003ca href=\"https://buffalobluestrio.com/home\">Buffalo Blues Trio\u003c/a>, as they are known, totally ripped. The DJs were good, but live music in a roadhouse can’t be beat. After the first set, we ducked upstairs, watched \u003cem>Who Framed Roger Rabbit\u003c/em>? (recommend!) and got to bed early. The next morning, we grabbed some breakfast burritos at the Whale City Bakery (hard recommend!), and grabbed our gear. Right before we left, the German man staying next door to us informed us that he’d spotted a whale from the balcony, and sure enough, we looked out and—boom!—there was a spout. An auspicious start!\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=549\">Wilder Ranch State Park\u003c/a> sits between Davenport and Santa Cruz proper. From the parking lot, we’d head up into the mountains, drift north through some redwood canyons, and then pop out at 4 Mile Beach and take the bluff trail back to Wilder. 12 miles! Probably double the longest the kid had ever hiked. But they felt ready and I had the faith. Plus, I figured, if we really needed to, once we got down to the beach, we’d also be down at Highway 1 and could probably get a ride back to our car.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>So, filled with excitement, we headed up a trail through a meadow of waving grass. We saw a hovering kite (the bird!) and our eyes followed it up to an enormous gyre of birds in the distance, rotating on the winds. By the time they’d disappeared, we’d already climbed most of the big early hill. A turkey surprised us on the left (“Back off,” it said, in turkey), roly-polies and stink bugs crossed our path, and soon we were high on a ridge, heading into the forest.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>On our way to the redwood trails, we took a cut off that brought us past a gorgeous patch of mariposa lilies—\u003cem>Calochortus albus\u003c/em>, in this case, or fairy lanterns—and then we were in the trees. Sorrel carpeted the floor. It was cool and quiet. The highlight for both of us was the Enchanted Loop, which lived up to its name. Trillium about to burst forth dotted the trail, and there was something about the shafts of light falling to the forest floor. They seemed to lead your eyes to perfect scenes: a happy moss covered stump, a western blue iris, a fern-laden clearing.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>The whole trail was so peaceful and the hiking so pleasant that it was almost a surprise when we reached the beach.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>Which was cold.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>And windy.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>We ate quickly (the other piece of the burrito and a croissant) and retreated to the bluff trail. Pelicans squadroned overhead. Our feet started to hurt (just a little). We made steady progress winding around beach inlets and talked about whatever was left in our minds. Why some rocks weathered faster than others. What my kid would paint from this trip. California buckeye. The ice cream we were going to eat after we finished. Yes, ice cream, by the last half mile, ice cream was all we could think about (ice cream). And just when we were about to lose patience with the plodding end of the trail, there we were, back at the parking lot, slightly different people than when we’d left.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>And yes, we got huge ice cream cones from Marianne’s and put on a Radiolab about medieval cures for infections and drove all the way home to celebrate Mother’s Day. “We gotta do that again,” my kid said. And by beach, I don’t mean Crown Beach in Alameda or Keller Beach in Point Richmond, I am talking about a beach-beach, an am-I-in-Los-Angeles beach. Santa Cruz, man, what a surprise.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>I was there because my 12-year-old and I had been talking about doing a big hike for months. Neither of us likes camping, but we love hiking. So, we’d been talking about doing some kind of \u003ca href=\"https://www.outsideonline.com/adventure-travel/destinations/best-hut-to-hut-hikes/\">hut-to-hut hike\u003c/a>, or as it was more likely to be, a hotel-to-hotel hike.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>I’d promised we’d set a date and then make it happen. But, as things go, we could not really clear two days to do such a thing between afterschool activities and work stuff and family stuff. So: we took our ambitions down a notch and settled on a long hike at Wilder Ranch, just north of Santa Cruz.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Neither of us really “does beach,” so we headed out of town to our hotel pretty quickly. I’d booked a room at the \u003ca href=\"https://www.davenportroadhouse.com/\">Davenport Roadhouse\u003c/a>, a fantastic old place that seems like it’s trying to combine the old Santa Cruz Mountains vibe with the newer “cool tech family moves to small town” reality. When we arrived, there were DJs playing to a hip crowd, well-attired small children scattered about the large back yard. Inside, three seasoned blues musicians were setting up to play. The \u003ca href=\"https://buffalobluestrio.com/home\">Buffalo Blues Trio\u003c/a>, as they are known, totally ripped. The DJs were good, but live music in a roadhouse can’t be beat. After the first set, we ducked upstairs, watched \u003cem>Who Framed Roger Rabbit\u003c/em>? (recommend!) and got to bed early. The next morning, we grabbed some breakfast burritos at the Whale City Bakery (hard recommend!), and grabbed our gear. Right before we left, the German man staying next door to us informed us that he’d spotted a whale from the balcony, and sure enough, we looked out and—boom!—there was a spout. An auspicious start!\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=549\">Wilder Ranch State Park\u003c/a> sits between Davenport and Santa Cruz proper. From the parking lot, we’d head up into the mountains, drift north through some redwood canyons, and then pop out at 4 Mile Beach and take the bluff trail back to Wilder. 12 miles! Probably double the longest the kid had ever hiked. But they felt ready and I had the faith. Plus, I figured, if we really needed to, once we got down to the beach, we’d also be down at Highway 1 and could probably get a ride back to our car.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>So, filled with excitement, we headed up a trail through a meadow of waving grass. We saw a hovering kite (the bird!) and our eyes followed it up to an enormous gyre of birds in the distance, rotating on the winds. By the time they’d disappeared, we’d already climbed most of the big early hill. A turkey surprised us on the left (“Back off,” it said, in turkey), roly-polies and stink bugs crossed our path, and soon we were high on a ridge, heading into the forest.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>On our way to the redwood trails, we took a cut off that brought us past a gorgeous patch of mariposa lilies—\u003cem>Calochortus albus\u003c/em>, in this case, or fairy lanterns—and then we were in the trees. Sorrel carpeted the floor. It was cool and quiet. The highlight for both of us was the Enchanted Loop, which lived up to its name. Trillium about to burst forth dotted the trail, and there was something about the shafts of light falling to the forest floor. They seemed to lead your eyes to perfect scenes: a happy moss covered stump, a western blue iris, a fern-laden clearing.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>The whole trail was so peaceful and the hiking so pleasant that it was almost a surprise when we reached the beach.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>Which was cold.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>And windy.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u003cp>We ate quickly (the other piece of the burrito and a croissant) and retreated to the bluff trail. Pelicans squadroned overhead. Our feet started to hurt (just a little). We made steady progress winding around beach inlets and talked about whatever was left in our minds. Why some rocks weathered faster than others. What my kid would paint from this trip. California buckeye. The ice cream we were going to eat after we finished. Yes, ice cream, by the last half mile, ice cream was all we could think about (ice cream).
