Empecé a trabajar en KQED en enero, menos de dos meses antes del inicio de la pandemia de covid-19. Soy productora de Forum, un programa de radio de discusión enfocado en noticias y asuntos públicos que sale al aire de 9 a 11 a.m. todos los días. Durante mi trabajo en Forum, he producido segmentos sobre vivienda asequible, racismo en comunidades no blancas, el gran número de casos de covid-19 entre los Latinos, e historias personales de sobrevivientes de covid-19.
Este es mi primer trabajo en radio. Anteriormente he trabajado en periódicos por casi dos décadas, nunca esperé hacer un cambio a otros medios de comunicación pero estaba interesada hacer un cambio. A pesar de no tener experiencia en radio, siempre he sido una persona interesada en las historias que busca informar al mundo por medio de mi trabajo.

Recientemente, periodistas de color han sido emporedados en producir más periodismo que muestra los diferentes matices de las comunidades de color en nuestras estaciones. En Forum, tenemos la visión más allá de las personas que nos escuchan todos los días, también pensamos en términos de podcasts y archivos. Además, estamos buscando maneras de conectar con nuestra audiencia por redes sociales para continuar nuestras conversaciones.
Cómo Latina, hispanohablante e hija de migrantes mexicanos, parte de mi misión como periodista es el tener más historias sobre Latinos y tener mejor representación de los Latinos en las noticias. En Forum, he tratado de pensar más en las diferentes voces o perspectivas que merecen mayor atención y como podemos darle una plataforma a esas voces en nuestro programa.

Hello!
I came to work at KQED in January, less than two months before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. I work as a producer for Forum, a discussion program focused on news and public affairs that airs live from 9 to 11 a.m. each weekday. In my time with Forum, I have produced segments about affordable housing, anti-Blackness in non-white communities, the high infection rates of COVID-19 among Latinos and first-person stories of COVID-19 survivors.
This is my first job working in radio. I previously worked at newspapers for close to two decades. I had not pictured myself shifting gears to another type of media, but I was interested in trying something new. Even though I don’t have a radio background, I am, at my core, a curious storyteller who strives to explain the world to people through my work.
In recent years, journalists of color have been more empowered to produce more nuanced coverage of communities of color and raise issues about problems within newsrooms. At Forum, we are looking beyond the listeners who tune in live everyday to people who listen on their terms via podcasts or archives. We are devising ways to connect more with listeners on social media to continue the conversation.
As a Latina, Spanish-speaker and daughter of Mexican immigrants, I have made it part of my mission as a journalist to tell more stories about Latinos and foster better representation of Latinos in news. At Forum, I have been trying to think more about what voices or perspectives deserve a greater platform and how to give those voices and perspectives a proper treatment on our show.

I work as a producer for Forum, a discussion program focused on news and public affairs that airs live from 9 to 11 a.m. each weekday. In my time with Forum, I have produced segments about affordable housing, anti-Blackness in non-white communities, the high infection rates of COVID-19 among Latinos and first-person stories of COVID-19 survivors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is my first job working in radio. I previously worked at newspapers for close to two decades. I had not pictured myself shifting gears to another type of media, but I was interested in trying something new. Even though I don’t have a radio background, I am, at my core, a curious storyteller who strives to explain the world to people through my work.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In recent years, journalists of color have been more empowered to produce more nuanced coverage of communities of color and raise issues about problems within newsrooms. At Forum, we are looking beyond the listeners who tune in live everyday to people who listen on their terms via podcasts or archives. We are devising ways to connect more with listeners on social media to continue the conversation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As a Latina, Spanish-speaker and daughter of Mexican immigrants, I have made it part of my mission as a journalist to tell more stories about Latinos and foster better representation of Latinos in news. At Forum, I have been trying to think more about what voices or perspectives deserve a greater platform and how to give those voices and perspectives a proper treatment on our show.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I am always looking for show ideas, so please send them my way!
