On KQED's Forum program yesterday, the topic of conversation was the 21st Century Skills Movement and the guests talked a lot about what we cover on MindShift. Host Michael Krasny brought up questions about whether educators are forgoing core content and knowledge when emphasizing creativity, innovation, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. It was a great discussion.
My thoughts on this are obvious: When done right, core curriculum is taught alongside 21st century skills. Rather than being taught by traditional rote methods, students are learning by doing, and at the same time, they're learning real-life skills like collaboration and critical thinking. A lot of educators have cracked the nut on how to engage students in a meaningful and relevant way.
