He works as the chief medical officer at \u003ca href=\"http://doctorondemand.com\">Doctor on Demand\u003c/a>, a startup that connects patients to doctors online. Previously, he \u003ca href=\"http://radiology.stanford.edu/blog/archives/2010/07/basu-named-whit.html\">advised \u003c/a>the White House on health care policy and reform. Unlike restaurants, health care institutions shy away from publishing their prices, as it depends on who's footing the bill.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Some web-based tools do a decent job of providing cost estimates (\u003ca href=\"http://blogs.kqed.org/stateofhealth/2014/06/23/share-your-bill-make-health-costs-transparent-in-california/\">\u003cem>KQED\u003c/em> launched its own service, \u003cem>PriceCheck\u003c/em>, which relies on data aggregated from California-based readers)\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But for most patients, price is still a gamble. As one recent study found, \u003ca href=\"http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/a-blood-test-can-cost-from-10-to-10000-in-calif-hospitals-according-to-a-study/2014/08/16/aba02472-24ae-11e4-8593-da634b334390_story.html\">the price of a blood test in California\u003c/a> can range from $10 to $10,000, depending on the hospital.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://twitter.com/RS_Flinn/status/590932990487728128\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Unfortunately, improving price transparency isn't a simple proposition. The debate has raged for decades among health care policymakers and academics -- \u003ca href=\"http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2014/09/18/Why-Health-Care-Price-Transparency-May-Not-Work\">some have argued that it may not work\u003c/a> well in practice.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But for most consumers, who aren't knee deep in D.C. politics, it is unclear why they can compare prices online for a steak dinner or a new television -- but not for a critical medical procedure.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>The Trouble With Jargon \u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The health care industry needs to a better job of reaching people on social media, and helping them understand the status quo.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Much of the available literature on the price transparency topic is confusing and downright boring. And at health care conferences, which I frequently attend in the pursuit of clear answers, speakers spew out incomprehensible medical jargon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I've often wondered: Do these \"industry insiders\" actually understand each other? Or are they nodding along for appearances sake?\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_2231\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 366px\">\u003cimg class=\"wp-image-2231\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/futureofyou/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2015/04/money_2.jpg\" alt='I suggested renaming my panel to \"Show me the money!\"' width=\"366\" height=\"198\">\u003cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forget reimbursement. \"Show me the money!\" \u003ccite>(Proverbs66.com)\u003c/cite>\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>In 2014, I was asked to interview a panel of medical experts at a conference on the topic of \"reimbursement.\" Half-joking, I suggested that we would have done a better job of filling the room by amending the description to \"show me the money.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"So...What even is reimbursement,?\" I asked the panel.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Crickets.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That opening question was met with a minute or so of excruciating silence. Eventually, several of the speakers piped up, each giving me a slightly different answer.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Dr. Jordan Shlain, a physician I bumped into at a recent health-tech conference, had a similar experience when he asked an audience of 400 people if they understood the meaning of the term \"patient engagement.\" Two hands went up.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I strongly agree with Shlain, \u003ca href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20141028232337-30819-cracking-open-medical-jargon-case-1-patient-engagement\">who shared this experience in a blog post\u003c/a>, that if we want patients to participate in important, ongoing policy discussions about the future of health care, we need to cut down on our use of jargon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If analogies resonate with people and prompt a discussion about health care, bring 'em on.\u003c/p>\n\n","blocks":[],"excerpt":"At this hypothetical restaurant, you're told that the cost of the meal will fluctuate based on where you sit, and who happens to serve you. And at health care conferences, which I frequently attend in the pursuit of clear answers, speakers spew out incomprehensible medical jargon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I've often wondered: Do these \"industry insiders\" actually understand each other?
