This June, KQED Education presented at the 20th Annual Allied Media Conference in Detroit, Michigan. The conference convened media makers, community organizers, educators and youth around using collaborative media to create social change.

In our session, Handing Over the Mic: KQED’s Youth Takeover of the News, Tyrius Ammons, a recent graduate of Richmond High School and Youth Takeover contributor, shared his experience participating in the project that included a co-hosting role for the news podcast, The California Report Magazine.

As part of the Movement Journalism conference track, our session explored the role of public media in providing opportunities for youth to share stories and issues that matter to them.  Session attendees including educators, youth, and public media staff learned about the process of developing the Youth Takeover, heard stories that were aired, and shared thoughts on how to incorporate youth voice into their work.
