Proposition 50

Should California redraw its congressional district lines?

Loading...

Proposition 50 would temporarily replace the current congressional maps drawn by the nonpartisan California Citizens Redistricting Commission with maps favoring Democrats. The new lines would remain in place for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 House elections. The measure was placed on the ballot by Democrats in the state legislature as Republican lawmakers in Texas pursued their own pro-GOP redistricting plan.

Yes Argument

California cannot stand by while Republican-led states such as Texas redraw their maps to favor the GOP. Californians need to fight fire with fire to win back control of the House of Representatives in 2026 and provide a check on President Donald Trump. Proposition 50 sets aside California’s current congressional maps temporarily to address the urgent need to break the Republican hold on power in D.C.

No Argument

Californians voted in 2008 to create the Citizens Redistricting Commission because residents wanted district lines to be drawn based on the input of Californians, not politicians. Instead of joining a gerrymandering race to the bottom, California should remain a gold standard for fair political maps. Proposition 50 will place communities with little in common in the same House district, just to maximize chances of Democratic victory.
