"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. The 1992 Los Angeles riots also made an impact. In high school, I got involved in community service groups, and I had teachers that picked me out and put me in leadership development programs. Then before I knew it, this kind of work was all I wanted to do.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>QUESTION: There was some grumblings on blogs and the internet during the campaign that you were playing the race card. Did you play the race card?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>JANE: I don’t think so. I don’t think we ever thought about [using my race during the campaign]. I found that having an immigrant family experience allowed me to connect with a lot of different communities, whether it was Filipino, Vietnamese, Central American or Mexican. I do think being a daughter of immigrants [helped voters relate to me].\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Kim has also caused a bit of a stir with her refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance at Board of Supervisor meetings. This has irritated \u003ca href=\"http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/02/02/progressive-san-fran-supervisor-defiant-over-pledge/\">conservatives\u003c/a> as well as some \u003ca href=\"http://sfist.com/2011/01/26/here_we_go_district_6_supervisor_ja.php\">locals\u003c/a>. (Not that the two are mutually exclusive.) (Well, not \u003cem>entirely\u003c/em>.) \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Kim recently talked to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=5433\">Bay Area Reporter\u003c/a> about her stance:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\"It was a personal decision I made in high school. Every time I stand, I get a chance to reflect on how the work is so important,\" said Kim, the first Korean American to serve on the board.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Kim said her stance is similar to the one taken by Will Phillips, an Arkansas boy who garnered national news attention in 2009 when he refused to recite the pledge with his then fifth grade class because of laws banning LGBT people from marrying or adopting children.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"There are many examples in our country where we are still trying to move forward to that ideal we espouse. A great example is marriage equality,\" said Kim, 33, a civil rights lawyer and community activist. \"There are so many civil rights issues we are still working on in this country. It is not just LGBT rights but also communities of color, immigrants, and women. That is why I am so committed to public service. I do want to be a part of helping our nation achieve those ideals.\"\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Really if you think about it, it's hard to believe that Kim is the first San Francisco supe to opt out of the pledge. You mean Chris Daly stood there with hand over heart mouthing \"one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all\"? \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Maybe he had his fingers crossed...\u003c/p>\n\n",

The box full of letters, photos, and books was placed behind the building’s cornerstone by San Francisco Mayor \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._H._McCarthy\">P.H. “Pinhead” McCarthy\u003c/a> in 1910.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://media.baycitizen.org/uploaded/images/2011/1/cleveland-school-1909/original/Cleveland%20school%201909.jpg\">\u003cstrong>Bay Citizen\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2011/01/27/BAP01HEK9S.DTL&object=%2Fc%2Fpictures%2F2011%2F01%2F26%2Fba-timecapsule27_0502884791.jpg\">\u003cstrong>San Francisco Chronicle\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> have put up two really good ones.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/01/26/BAP01HEK9S.DTL\">Chronicle\u003c/a> explains how the box full of ancient mementos was discovered:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Former Cleveland student and now school volunteer John Weidinger \u003ca href=\"http://www.jsyk.com/2010/12/17/san-francisco-school-discovers-100-year-old-time-capsule/\">discovered\u003c/a> the time capsule’s existence while researching the history of the 100-year-old school.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The capsule was mentioned briefly in a San Francisco Call newspaper story at the time, saying then-Mayor P.J. “Pinhead” McCarthy placed the box behind the cornerstone after the children sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It didn’t say what was inside.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Had I not found that one sentence, maybe we might have lost that part of San Francisco history,” Weidinger said Wednesday moments before he pulled the contents out of the box in front of the students.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During the school’s winter break, district carpenters cut around the cornerstone and confirmed the box existed. Brown’s \u003ca href=\"http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jan/15/local/la-me-local-budget-20110115\">proposal\u003c/a> to eliminate hundreds of redevelopment agencies around the state. This \u003ca href=\"http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/15/panelists-split-ending-redevelopment-agencies/\">article\u003c/a> from the San Diego Union-Tribune describes the plan in capsule:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Gov.
