Mientras el incendio llamado Glass Fire arrasaba en los condados de Sonoma y Napa el martes, Guillermo Herrera y cinco compañeros de su trabajo transportaban herramientas a camiones, preparándose para recoger una tanda de uvas de un viñedo cercano.

Desde el incendio de Walbridge en el mes pasado, Smith dijo que su oficina ha ayudado a cientos de bodegas, operadores de ganado, viveros y otras empresas agrícolas a ser verificadas como tales, de modo que puedan solicitar permiso a las fuerzas del orden para entrar a las áreas de evacuación y continuar las funciones esenciales como cosechar uvas o alimentar al ganado.
"Si no pueden hacer el trabajo, no pueden pagar a sus empleados, llevar las cosechas al mercado y es posible que sus negocios no sobreviviran", dijo. "La agricultura no se detiene porque hay una emergencia declarada".
