California attorney general, primary
In a year where crime is a major political focus, the race for California attorney general is shaping up to be a referendum of sorts on progressive criminal justice policies. Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta, who was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, faces three main challengers: Nathan Hochman and Eric Early — both Republican lawyers — as well as Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, who is running as a decline-to-state candidate. One of the three likely will face off against Bonta in the fall election.

Recall of San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin
San Francisco voters will weigh in on whether District Attorney Chesa Boudin should stay in office or be replaced by a pick of Mayor London Breed. Boudin, a former public defender elected to be the city’s top prosecutor in 2019 as a progressive reformer, is facing a recall referendum that differs from statewide recalls in that it doesn’t allow voters to choose a replacement if the recall succeeds. Supporters of the recall say Boudin has managed the office poorly and isn’t holding criminals accountable, while opponents say it’s not fair to blame Boudin for the city’s entrenched problems and argue he’s governing as promised.

State controller, primary
The only statewide election without an incumbent is the race to replace Betty Yee, California’s top fiscal officer, who has termed out. As the only Republican in the race, policy analyst Lanhee Chen looks like a good bet to advance from the primary and give the GOP a shot at their first statewide win since 2006. Board of Equalization member Malia Cohen, Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin, state Senator Steve Glazer and Monterey Park Mayor Yvonne Yiu are the Democrats vying for the job, which comes with the authority to audit state programs and administer state payments.

San José mayor, primary
Voters in the nation’s 10th-largest city are picking a new mayor to tackle issues including the city’s homelessness crisis, which outgoing Mayor Sam Liccardo has called San José’s “greatest failure.” The six candidates on the ballot include Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, as well as city Councilmembers Dev Davis, Matt Mahan and Raul Peralez. Unless one candidate receives a majority of votes, the top two finishers in the June primary will face each other in a November runoff.
