Sepulvado comes to KQED from Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), where he was the local host and executive producer of the flagship NPR weekend news program \u003cem>Weekend Edition\u003c/em>. He will make his debut on \u003cstrong>\u003cem>The California Report\u003c/em>\u003c/strong> on September 2, 2016.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prior to his work at OPB, Sepulvado served as a producer for America Public Media’s \u003cem>Marketplace Weekend. \u003c/em>He also worked as a national correspondent for CNN and as news director at WUSF in Tampa, Florida. Sepulvado has earned prestigious RTDNA Murrow and PRNDI awards for investigative reporting, and helped CNN take home a Peabody Award for coverage of the 2010 Gulf oil spill.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Joining KQED brings Sepulvado back to his deep California roots. He was born in Monterey and lived in Salinas during his early childhood. His family helped settle Monterey and San Benito Counties for the Spanish in the 1700s, and his great-great grandfather was Juan Bautista Alvarado, the last Mexican Governor of California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"My story and my family's story is impossible anyplace other than California,\" Sepulvado notes. \"California is not just part of my identity, it is the foundation on which my identity has been built. And that's why I am so honored to get the chance to help tell the stories of other Californians and the collective story of the state as host of \u003cstrong>\u003cem>The\u003c/em> \u003cem>California Report\u003c/em>\u003c/strong>.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“John is coming home to California, and we couldn’t be happier to have him back,” says KQED Executive Editor for News Holly Kernan. “He brings so much passion and compassion to his reporting and there are so many great stories to tell about the Golden State. Sepulvado comes to KQED from Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), where he was the local host and executive producer of the flagship NPR weekend news program \u003cem>Weekend Edition\u003c/em>. He will make his debut on \u003cstrong>\u003cem>The California Report\u003c/em>\u003c/strong> on September 2, 2016.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prior to his work at OPB, Sepulvado served as a producer for America Public Media’s \u003cem>Marketplace Weekend. \u003c/em>He also worked as a national correspondent for CNN and as news director at WUSF in Tampa, Florida. Sepulvado has earned prestigious RTDNA Murrow and PRNDI awards for investigative reporting, and helped CNN take home a Peabody Award for coverage of the 2010 Gulf oil spill.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Joining KQED brings Sepulvado back to his deep California roots. He was born in Monterey and lived in Salinas during his early childhood. His family helped settle Monterey and San Benito Counties for the Spanish in the 1700s, and his great-great grandfather was Juan Bautista Alvarado, the last Mexican Governor of California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

His first day on air will be April 11, 2016.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Brian has been a reporter with Southern California Public Radio (SCPR), in Los Angeles, for nine years. Most recently he covered the working and entrepreneurship beat. Before joining SCPR, he worked as a producer for the Marketplace Morning Report. Brian’s work has won several awards from the Los Angeles Press Club, the Radio Television News Association of Southern California and Public Radio News Directors Incorporated.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Brian’s passion for public service, great voice and depth of experience are exactly what we were looking for in a news anchor,” said Holly Kernan, KQED executive editor for news. “He’ll be a terrific addition to a very talented team, and we look forward to having Brian guide us through the local news landscape each morning.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"KQED is a gold standard in local public broadcasting, so I'm honored, thrilled and humbled to get this opportunity,” said Watt. \"This is the work that I've always wanted to do, in a place where I've always wanted to live. I'm very proud of my accomplishments as a reporter, but my ultimate goal in public radio has always been to host or anchor, to tell listeners things they need to know and bring them stories that they want to hear.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Prior to dedicating himself full-time to journalism, Brian gained deep experience in the arts and politics. In 1998, he earned a masters in theater from the Sorbonne Theater Studies Institute in Paris. As an actor, he appeared on TV shows including The West Wing and The District and performed in France, Italy, Poland and Brazil, and even filmed a movie in Budapest, Hungary. After graduating from Yale in 1990, Brian served as a personal assistant to U.S. Senator Harris Wofford before becoming campaign manager for his father Mel Watt’s successful congressional campaign.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Watt has deep ties to the Bay Area, “I am lucky to have married a woman from San Francisco, whom I met two decades ago in Paris. In 1998, he earned a masters in theater from the Sorbonne Theater Studies Institute in Paris. As an actor, he appeared on TV shows including The West Wing and The District and performed in France, Italy, Poland and Brazil, and even filmed a movie in Budapest, Hungary. The Peabody Award–winning program will record three episodes at San Francisco’s Nourse Theater in front of sold-out crowds on Thursdays, July 17, 24 and 31 at 7:30pm. Tickets for the live recordings sold out in six hours after being released, but a very limited number of press tickets are available for the recording events.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The weekly hour-long news quiz offers a fast-paced, irreverent look at the week’s news. Host Peter Sagal leads panelists (comedians, authors and journalists to be announced at a later date) and callers through a series of games designed to quiz them on the week’s news and showcase their wits. Callers compete for the most coveted prize in public radio: a home answering machine greeting custom-recorded by “Scorekeeper Emeritus” Carl Kasell. Listeners can get in on the action by calling 888-WAIT-WAIT. \u003cstrong>The San Francisco episodes will air on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM on\u003c/strong> \u003cstrong>Saturday, July 19, 26 and August 2 at 11am\u003c/strong>.
