SAN FRANCISCO, CA — KQED is proud to present “Many Roads Forward,” the newest two-episode series from Roadtrip Nation. The series showcases how individuals are upskilling into promising new career paths through short-term learning programs, offering a flexible alternative to traditional degree paths. The series premieres on public television stations nationwide in March 2026.

For many, four-year and two-year degree programs are not feasible due to cost or lifestyle constraints. Roadtrip Nation: “Many Roads Forward” follows three individuals as they discover pathways designed to fit unique life circumstances. The series highlights how microcredential programs allow people to create the lives they envision without putting their entire lives on hold.

The Roadtrippers

Tawie came to the U.S. from Zimbabwe with hopes of pursuing a degree in chemistry. But as the cost of college became too overwhelming, he was forced to drop out and find another path. Now, a recent graduate of an information technology (IT) bootcamp—and valedictorian of his class—Tawie has opened up promising new roads for his next chapter, and is looking forward to speaking with leaders who have similarly overcome obstacles and found stability in their careers after completing IT certifications.

Dafina is a proud mother of three who’s learning how to balance the responsibilities of parenthood with trying to find her own path. After losing her job in 2022, her career journey was recently reinvigorated by multiple microcredential programs, including an IT compliance internship at Costco. With interests in cybersecurity, AI, project management, supply chain, government, and entrepreneurship, she’s motivated to help organizations shape governance, risk and compliance, and is eager to connect with leaders across these diverse fields, believing that exposure to these different perspectives will help to broaden her own horizons.

Ronnie always knew that a four-year degree wasn’t the right next step for him. So, as a senior in high school, he decided to enroll in a short-term learning program after graduation—a pathway he wishes more high school students knew about. While completing his IT program, he found support and community by teaching Muay Thai on the side, and now feels split between pursuing a financially stable path in IT, versus following his passion for Muay Thai. He’s hoping to speak with leaders who understand his multiple passions, and can show him how to combine his interests into one fulfilling career.

A Message of Opportunity

This series speaks directly to those looking to advance their education or careers through flexible means. It highlights the reality that there are pathways available to meet people where they are, proving that career growth is possible at any stage of life.
