It's a perfect storm that first started brewing in Fall 2014 with \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/pop/tag/serial/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Serial\u003c/em>\u003c/a>\u003cem>,\u003c/em> a podcast that meticulously questioned the legitimacy of the conviction of Adnan Syed, for the murder of his then girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. \u003cem>Serial\u003c/em> didn't just capture the nation's attention (the way no other podcast has managed before or since), it also recently resulted in the granting of \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/pop/2016/06/30/breaking-judge-vacates-murder-conviction-of-serials-adnan-syed-and-grants-new-trial/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a new trial for Syed\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[aside postid='pop_103105']A few months after \u003cem>Serial\u003c/em>'s enormous success, HBO unleashed \u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jinx_(miniseries)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>The Jinx\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, a chilling documentary series that cataloged the life of real estate heir Robert Durst and the suspicious deaths peppered throughout his life. Durst participated in the making of the series, but a \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLqyFgz86RA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jaw-dropping finale\u003c/a> resulted in his arrest on charges of first-degree murder. It won nine of the 22 awards it was nominated for at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There were factors that made the OJ Simpson case a perfect candidate for a true-life drama series. Every minute of court time had been videotaped and broadcast as it happened, so perfectly recreating the events was possible. What's more, thanks to the fact that almost \u003ca href=\"https://www.bustle.com/articles/151933-13-books-about-the-oj-simpson-trial-to-read-if-american-crime-story-piqued-your-interest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">every major player in the case wrote a book\u003c/a> about it afterwards, accurate personal information about almost everyone involved allowed the producers to portray exactly what each individual went through during the trial. Proceedings have begun in Baltimore and Sarah Koenig, who got us all so worked up about this story in the first place, was thankfully in attendance. She shared the big takeaways from day 3 with producer Dana Chivvis over the phone in \u003ca href=\"https://serialpodcast.org/season-one/adnan-syeds-hearing/day-02\" target=\"_blank\">a mini \u003cem>Serial\u003c/em> update episode\u003c/a>. If you missed Day 1 or 2, don't worry; \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/pop/tag/serial/\" target=\"_blank\">I got you covered\u003c/a>. \u003cem>The Baltimore Sun\u003c/em>’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/bs-md-ci-syed-hearing-day-three-20160205-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Fenton also reported \u003c/a>on the day's events. Here's what they had to say:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>Dave Irwin, a longtime Baltimore criminal defense attorney, testified that the fact that Adnan's legal team did not call on potential alibi Asia McClain \"changed the ballgame's result.\" He went on to call McClain \"powerfully credible\" and said \"it would've made an incredible difference in the outcome of the case.\"\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Irwin also said that calling Asia as an alibi was the \"minimum\" of what Adnan's defense team could have done for him and that there was no excuse for failing to do so.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Another cell phone expert disagreed with Day 2's expert and said that the original cell tower testimony was fine, despite the disclaimer that warned against using incoming calls as evidence because of their unreliability.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Sean Gordon, a defense investigator, took the stand to testify that he contacted 41 of 83 people who were on a list of potential alibis created by the initial defense team (Asia wasn't even on this list). Gordon said that only four of those he contacted said they had been contacted by the defense back in 1999 and that none were asked about being alibis.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli> The defense also called Michelle Hamiel, a woman who worked at the library where Asia said she saw Adnan on the day of the murder. Hamiel testified that security camera footage of the day in question had been taped over by the time of Adnan's arrest.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Hamiel backed up McClain's claim that she had called the library to inquire about the security cameras. (The prosecutor has said that the library didn't have cameras.)\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>It was noted that McClain's desire for the tapes to exist made her claim more believable. Here's what they had to say:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>Dave Irwin, a longtime Baltimore criminal defense attorney, testified that the fact that Adnan's legal team did not call on potential alibi Asia McClain \"changed the ballgame's result.\" He went on to call McClain \"powerfully credible\" and said \"it would've made an incredible difference in the outcome of the case.\"\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Irwin also said that calling Asia as an alibi was the \"minimum\" of what Adnan's defense team could have done for him and that there was no excuse for failing to do so.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Another cell phone expert disagreed with Day 2's expert and said that the original cell tower testimony was fine, despite the disclaimer that warned against using incoming calls as evidence because of their unreliability.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Sean Gordon, a defense investigator, took the stand to testify that he contacted 41 of 83 people who were on a list of potential alibis created by the initial defense team (Asia wasn't even on this list). Gordon said that only four of those he contacted said they had been contacted by the defense back in 1999 and that none were asked about being alibis.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli> The defense also called Michelle Hamiel, a woman who worked at the library where Asia said she saw Adnan on the day of the murder. Hamiel testified that security camera footage of the day in question had been taped over by the time of Adnan's arrest.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>Hamiel backed up McClain's claim that she had called the library to inquire about the security cameras. (The prosecutor has said that the library didn't have cameras.)\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>It was noted that McClain's desire for the tapes to exist made her claim more believable. Proceedings have begun in Baltimore and Sarah Koenig, who got us all so worked up about this story in the first place, was thankfully in attendance. She shared the big takeaways from day 1 (of 3) with producer Dana Chivvis over the phone in \u003ca href=\"https://serialpodcast.org/season-one/adnan-syeds-hearing/day-01\" target=\"_blank\">a mini \u003cem>Serial\u003c/em> update episode\u003c/a>. \u003cem>The Baltimore Sun\u003c/em>’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/bs-md-ci-syed-hearing-day-one-20160203-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Fenton also reported \u003c/a>on the day's events. Here's what they had to say:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>The first half of the day was spent establishing that Cristina Gutierrez, Adnan's lawyer during his initial trial, had been declining physically, mentally and professionally. Two of Gutierrez' former colleagues testified about how she passed off cases to others around that time, due to the physical pain she was in, and said that her courtroom performance waned dramatically.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>The big witness of the day was Asia McClain, who has long claimed that she spoke with Adnan in the library during the time frame of Hae Min Lee's murder.\u003c/li>\n\u003cli>\u003cstrong>Asia on why she was testifying: \u003c/strong>\"I felt for justice to be served we should put all the information on the table.
