Hector Perez: A Close Encounter

Hector Perez shares about being struck by a car and his family’s reaction.

Two hours before the release of Squid Game 3, I was racing home to be ready. But I ended up in the hospital due to me being the pedestrian in a vehicle-pedestrian collision.

Usually, I’m able to walk or bike home at night, but my bike was stolen a few months before. So I used my electric scooter instead. Shortly after leaving my cousin’s house, the scooter hit something, and I tripped. I landed on my feet and was OK as I thought to myself, “Well, it could’ve been worse.”

I was on one side of the street, with a gas station on the other side. But, instead of waiting until the traffic light changed, I wanted to take my rights of the Freedom to Walk Act, and jaywalk to the other side. One little “SKRRT” and I was hit. Rolling over the car, and with one of the tires running over my arm.

I was able to get up, off the street, and onto the sidewalk, while the driver panicked and helped me by calling 9-1-1 while I called my mom, ensuring panic from her and my dad. I didn’t necessarily feel any pain that had me panicking, even after being hit by a car.

I was helped up and put into the ambulance while my mom entered with me. The panic from my parents really put into perspective (wink wink), how even though I didn’t mind what happened and only wanted to check my arm to make sure it wasn’t broken, my family was extremely worried, simply because of my wellbeing.

A few hours in the hospital, and I was let go. My walking was a bit iffy, and my “road rashed” arm was bandaged up, surprisingly not broken from the weight of the car. Even though everything was calm and I was able to watch Squid Game 3 when I got home, I couldn’t forget how much panic my family was placed with because of my actions that I caused to myself. Although the harm to me didn’t hurt, it didn’t mean it didn’t hurt others. With a Perspective, I’m Hector Perez.

Hector Perez is a student at Kennedy High School in Richmond.
