When Ramona Ripston took the reigns at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California 38 years ago, she was the first woman to head a regional chapter. She had a staff of six people. When she retires in a few weeks, Ripston will leave a staff of 50 with an annual budget of $6 million, and a long legacy of civil rights activism.
