Counting the Homeless
Thousands of volunteers fanned out across California this week to count every homeless person they could find. We joined one homeless count in South Los Angeles, home to the nation's largest homeless population.
Homeless Census and Federal Dollars
The homeless census is used by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to determine how much federal money is doled out for local homeless programs. We talk with Ophelia Basgal, administrator for the federal Housing and Urban Development's Region 9.
Building a Better Lightbulb
The 100-watt incandescent light bulb is starting to dim. Thanks to a federal law signed three years ago, the bulbs are being phased out nationwide and will gradually be replaced by bulbs that are just as bright, but use nearly 30 percent less energy. That leaves consumers with choices, including Halogen bulbs and compact fluorescents, or CFLs. CFLs are some of the most efficient bulbs on the market -- but they have an image problem.
