Week of Education Protests Begins With Arrests
About 1,000 protesters, organized by the California Teachers Association, took over the state capitol yesterday. Roughly 65 of them were arrested last night after the building closed and California Highway Patrol officers warned them to leave. So ended Day One of a week of statewide protests against education budget cuts dubbed a "State of Emergency."
Some Schools May Shorten Year to Fit Budget
For decades, California students went to school 180 days in a year. This year, many districts trimmed a week of instruction from their calendars, and some plan to cut up to a month if this year's cuts are severe.
