Supreme Court Tells State to Fix Prison Crowding
With Monday's U.S. Supreme Court decision going against the California Department of Corrections, state officials are drawing up plans to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons. The court said the state must reduce the population by about 35,000 people in the next two years.

Counties Face New Costs Under Prison Realignment
The plan known as realignment is one part of solving the overcrowding of state prisons. It would shift thousands of low-level, low-risk, non-violent inmates from state facilities to county jails -- and put responsibility for their supervision on the shoulders of county parole officers.
