Weekend Handmade
On The California Report this week, we're celebrating creativity, with an eye to the fact this is the season for giving. Sometimes the best gift is something you make from the materials at hand. When Kelly Wilkinson isn't working as a reporter at KQED, she gets crafty. Her new book, "Weekend Handmade," includes projects like salves, marmalade and pillows that can be completed in just a few hours. Host Rachael Myrow sat down for a cup of tea recently at Wilkinson's home in San Francisco.
Central Valley Label Embraces the Cassette
If you're old enough, you remember making mix tapes. If you're not old enough, there were these things called cassettes. They must have them in a museum somewhere. Or in your dad's garage. But now, some do-it-yourself musicians are rediscovering the romantic magic of this old technology. Jefferson Beavers has more from Fresno.
Telling Life Stories Through Quilts
Generations of women have been telling stories in fabric -- with quilts. Lisa Morehouse paid a visit to one quilting bee in Mendocino County's Anderson Valley. Many of the group's members emigrated to work in the local apple orchards and vineyards.
Eames: The Architect & The Painter
Charles and Ray Eames are considered the royal couple of modern design. No doubt, you've sat in one of their chairs, and seen their furniture in magazines and offices everywhere, but the Eameses did a lot more than design furniture. This dynamic duo's creative spark lit up fine art, architecture, industrial design, graphic, museum exhibits and film. A new documentary, "EAMES: The Architect and the Painter," explores the arch of their professional lives. It opened in Los Angeles last week, and will open in the San Francisco Bay area December 2. Jason Cohn, one of the filmmakers, joins us to talk about the documentary.
