Life After a Life Sentence
Today, we're breaking our usual format to focus on one topic - a matter of sudden freedom for men and women sentenced to serve 25 years to life behind bars under California's Three Strikes law. It's been a year since voters approved Proposition 36, allowing Three Strike inmates to win early release if their third strike wasn't serious or violent. More than 1,000 Three Strikers with reduced sentences are now out of prison. Reporter Michael Montgomery has been following three of those former inmates.

What Comes After Prop. 36?
Some inmates are getting released early under Prop. 36, but there are as many as 2,000 more who are still waiting on their petitions for re-sentencing. So what comes next? What have we learned so far, and what does it say about other efforts to overhaul California's criminal justice system? We turn to two people with different perspectives on the law and the criminal justice system.

Raul Ramirez, 1946-2013
Finally today, we have some very sad news to share about a beloved and respected member of The California Report family. Since 1995, Raul Ramirez has been a driving force behind The California Report. Raul died of cancer on Friday morning. He was 67 years old.
