State's Chief Justice Calls for More Spending on Cash-Strapped Courts
Tani Cantil-Sakauye, chief justice of the California Supreme Court, called on the state Legislature on Tuesday to spend far more on the judicial branch than Governor Brown recommends in his new budget plan. Cantil-Sakauye says years of deep budget cuts have left California "rationing justice," forcing the closure of 51 courthouses since 2008.

Every Thursday night at the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland, 19-year-old Juliet Small holds dance classes for young Native American girls. Small identifies as Apache, Navajo, Cherokee and Azteca. She went to a pow-wow when she was three years old, and hasn't stopped dancing since.
