Earthquake experts always say it's not a matter of if but when "The Big One" will strike. In the near future, though, Californians could get a warning before the shaking reaches them. That is, if the state is able to build up its bare-bones early warning system. A series of sensors placed near faults can detect a quake as it's happening -- and send out alerts to nearby towns and cities.
