California students who don't identify with the gender of their birth have new rights under a state law that took effect January 1. The School Success and Opportunity Act allows transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their gender identity. Opponents are challenging the new policies, and they'll find out next month if their referendum to repeal the law qualified for the November ballot.
