California revenues exceeded projections through March 31 by $1.3 billion, making it very hard for state lawmakers negotiating next year's budget to think in terms of restraint -- even if they know how heavily dependent the state's income is on its wealthiest citizens. Governor Jerry Brown popped up before the Assembly Budget Committee in Sacramento Monday to lobby for his plan to pay off debt and save for that proverbial "rainy day."

Toyota is consolidating its U.S. corporate management in Plano, Texas. Industry analysts say the move makes a lot of sense for the auto giant. But it's a big blow for Southern California, specifically for Torrance, where Toyota employs 5,300 people. The company estimates more than half of those jobs will move in the next three years.

Take the Vergara lawsuit, pending in Los Angeles over teacher tenure. The suit was brought by a Silicon Valley-based non-profit called Students Matter, a non-profit backed largely by one man: David Welch.
