Deported Immigrants Could Return Under New Settlement
Thousands of Mexican immigrants deported from Southern California over the past five years could be allowed to return, under an agreement between federal authorities and the ACLU. The civil rights group sued the feds last year, claiming U.S. border agents used deceptive tactics to get detained immigrants to take so-called "voluntary departure."

Immigration courts are notoriously backlogged. An immigrant in California seeking permanent residency today can expect to wait two to four years for the chance to plead her case. People locked in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention are one exception -- their hearings are usually fast-tracked. Now, judges are being asked to give equally high priority to the surge of unaccompanied minors, and families with children.
