Gov. Brown Signs 3 Landmark Bills Into Law
Tuesday was the deadline for Gov. Jerry Brown to sign or veto bills sent to him by the Legislature. The governor made national headlines with three bills he signed, one addressing rape and sexual assault on college campuses, another banning plastic bags and a gun control measure. Sacramento Bureau Chief Scott Detrow joins us to talk about the governor's actions and where it leaves him heading into the final weeks of his re-election campaign.

After Fire, Weed Residents Wonder If Full Recovery is Possible
It's been two weeks since wildfires scorched thousands of acres across northern California. Especially hard hit was the small town of Weed, an hour south of Oregon, near Mount Shasta. More than half of the people living there were forced to evacuate as firefighters scrambled to get the upper hand. We visit the working-class town of 3,000, which is trying to figure out how -- or if -- it can get back to normal.

How Some Deaf People 'Hear' the Shofar for Jewish New Year
This weekend, Jews throughout the world are observing Yom Kippur. On the heels of Rosh Hashana -- the Jewish New Year -- these are the holiest days in Judaism. A key part of the holiday is the ceremonial sounding of the shofar, a ram's horn blown to wake the congregation to the hopes and possibilities of the New Year. But what happens if you can't hear one of the most important traditions of the holiday? We find out at a unique synagogue in Northridge.

Pacific Crest Trail Hikers Find Refuge at the Sonora Pass Cafe
Right now, backpackers are crossing into Canada after five months of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. These "thru-hikers" started the trail in Mexico, and have traversed 2,650 miles. It can be grueling for hikers. Their toenails fall off, and their feet can swell whole shoe sizes. They say the only thing they talk about more than their feet is food. For the ongoing series "California Foodways," we visit a makeshift cafe on the Sonora Pass section of the trail, where hikers indulge in the first fresh fruit and sweet treats they've had in weeks.
