Putting up money for bail in order to get out of jail before a court date is a longstanding practice, but it’s come under a lot of fire recently. Critics say it’s unfair because the rich get out while the poor stay locked up. Today, two California lawmakers are set to introduce legislation meant to overhaul the cash bail system.
