Muni drivers unhappy with a city contract proposal called in sick early this week, causing major delays throughout the system on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Paul Rose said that on Monday 400 of the 600 buses, light-rail vehicles, streetcars and cable cars that would normally be on the streets were idled because of driver absences. Alex Duran has worked as a Muni driver for the past 15 years, and he's displeased with the proposed contract. "We haven't gotten a raise for five years, but they've been raising our premium," he said. "Technically, we're going to get $1.10 less per hour." (Mark Andrew Boyer/KQED)
Californians took to the polls on Tuesday, June 3, to vote in the primaries. The turnout was light in this first statewide test of the top two primary system, in which the two candidates with the most votes advance to the general election, no matter their party. The new system didn't seem to affect the results much, although other labels on the ballot did. The race for state controller has been particularly tight, with the second place spot still undecided.
