San Diego County Grieves After Fatal Shooting in Synagogue

The community of Poway near San Diego is reeling from a shooting that took place on Saturday inside of a synagogue. That shooting came six months after another synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There have been vigils on both nights since this tragedy took place, drawing community members and leaders from several faiths.

Opening Arguments to Begin Tuesday in Ghost Ship Fire Manslaughter Case

Opening arguments are expected to get underway tomorrow in the trial of the two men accused of involuntary manslaughter in the deadly Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland. If convicted, defendants Derick Almena and Max Harris could spend decades behind bars. Emotions are running high around this complex case.

Mother and Son Grapple With Poway Shooting

There are makeshift memorials on both sides of Rancho Bernardo Road, just in front of the synagogue. Heather Fay and her 8-year-old son Marshall were there on Sunday and they posted a sign that read “Make the love louder than the hate.”

All this week, KQED will be putting the voices of Bay Area high schoolers on the air as part of our annual Youth Take Over. Ninth grader Alondra Bravo goes to Woodside High School near Menlo Park. Her father, Francisco, emigrated to the US in the late 90s from Mexico. They sat down in their living room to talk about the sacrifices Francisco has made to try and give Alondra the American Dream.
