Memorial Day Events Planned Across the Bay Area

Memorial Day commemorates fallen service members across the country, and numerous ceremonies and remembrances are planned throughout the Bay Area.

BART, Caltrain, AC Transit, SamTrans and Muni will run on their Sunday schedules on Memorial Day. Parking meters in San Francisco will be enforced, but residential parking permits and street-sweeping limitations will not.

San Francisco

Presidio Memorial Day Commemoration

When: 9:30 a.m.
Where: The Presidio
Details: Dating back to 1868, this is one of the oldest and largest Bay Area events on Memorial Day. A 21-gun salute will resound across the Presidio at noon, part of an all-day event that begins with a flag raising at 9:30 a.m. The formal ceremony, which will be attended by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newson and San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell, will take place at 11 a.m. at San Francisco National Cemetery.

Submarine “Lost Boat” Ceremony

Where: Historic Pier 45
Details: Join submarine veterans aboard the USS Pampanito, honoring service members and submarines lost at sea. The event features 52 bell tolls for each boat and crew on "eternal patrol."

North Bay

Mill Valley

When: 10:30 a.m.
Where: Oak Mill Park
Details: The Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade will be preceded by a flag-raising ceremony at 9:45 a.m. at Lytton Square. There will be music and food after the parade at the Mill Valley Community Center.

Marin County

When: 9 a.m.
Where: Marin County Civic Center
Details: The Marin County Memorial Day Service includes a ceremony inside the Veterans Memorial Auditorium followed by an outdoor ceremony in front of the military monuments on Avenue of the Flags, just outside the auditorium.

South Bay

Saratoga

When: 9:30 a.m.
Where: Downtown Saratoga
Details: The 90th annual Memorial Day Observance in Saratoga begins with a procession starts at the Memorial Arch in Blaney Plaza on Saratoga Avenue followed by a service at 10 a.m. at Madronia Cemetery.

Colma

When: 1 p.m.
Where: Cypress Lawn Memorial Park
Details: All families and friends of veterans and the general public are invited to the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park to attend the annual service.

San Jose -- Oak Hill Memorial Park

When: 11 a.m.
Where: Oak Hill Memorial Park
Details: Four separate services are planned at Oak Hill Memorial Park, according to the San Jose Mercury News:

The day starts at 10 a.m. with a service for Japanese Americans who have served in the Armed Forces, followed by the main ceremony at 11 a.m. At 1:15 p.m., there’s a memorial for Civil War and Spanish-American War descendants, while Vietnam’s war dead are remembered during a 2:15 p.m. ceremony.

San Jose -- Los Gatos Memorial Park

When: 10 a.m.
Where: Los Gatos Memorial Park
Details: The event starts with a musical performance by the 70-piece San Jose Metropolitan Band, and the memorial service starts at 11 a.m.

East Bay

Walnut Creek

When: 10 a.m.
Where: Civic Park
Details: The city’s 30th annual Memorial Day ceremony will begin with opening remarks from Mayor Justin Wedel, Reverend Dwane Michael will give the invocation and blessing, and author Carrie Pepper will deliver the keynote address.

Alameda

When: 11 a.m.
Where: USS Hornet Museum
Details: A ceremony will be held on the Hangar Deck of the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda followed by a wreath toss. The museum opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.

Oakland

When: 10 a.m.
Where: Mountain View Cemetery
Details: The 98th Annual Memorial Day Commemoration will include a presentation of colors, salute to the fallen and guest speakers.
