Sacramento Steps Up Enforcement on Water Wasters
More than 60 percent of Sacramento's water use is taken up with residential irrigation. To cut down on all that lawn watering, the city has limited sprinkler use to two days per week -- and fines for repeat offenders quickly climb to $1,000. One of the reasons Sacramento is putting so much energy into enforcement is because it lacks a critical tool most California cities have had for generations: water meters. Only half of Sacramento's homes have water meters, and the city has put off finishing the job until 2025.
