Children with Mental Illness Lack Access to Emergency Beds
Four out of five counties in California don't have a single hospital bed for children in a psychiatric emergency. Today we continue our series on acute mental health care. The California Report's Elaine Korry says the few beds that do exist, mostly in the Bay Area and L.A. Basin, are always full, and that spells desperation for anyone caring for a troubled child. CORRECTION: Due to a reporting error, the original version of this story incorrectly identified John Muir Medical Center, Concord as the facility where Maria Ramirez's granddaughter was taken. We regret that error.
