A much anticipated storm finally hit the Bay Area early Thursday, Dec. 11, bringing with it flooding, high winds and power outages. The surf was high and powerful along the coast. This pier in Pacifica took a beating overnight. (Steven Byrne/KQED)

Storm drains and catchment basins clogged around San Francisco on Dec. 11, the day of the big storm. Stormwater filled the sewers and spilled out to inundate streets and lap at the doors of local homes and businesses. They joined the wave of protests following the grand jury decisions in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York not to indict white police officers involved in killing unarmed black men. Working with less than 12 hours to prepare, the RYSE Youth center in Richmond organized a solidarity action to stand with Ferguson, Missouri. The action lasted 4½  hours, the amount of time Michael Brown’s body was left in the street after the unarmed teen was shot and killed by a police officer.
