Pot Makes It to the Ballot
Yet another hot button issue is heading to the ballot in California, one that's sure to raise passions on both sides. This week, supporters of a measure to legalize and tax marijuana submitted plenty of signatures to place it before voters in November.

L.A.'s City Council and the Pot Question
Voters legalized medical marijuana in 1996, but without local regulation, pot clubs grew like weeds -- especially in major cities like Los Angeles. This week, L.A.'s City Council approved a measure that would shut down most of the hundreds of pot shops in the city and place tough restrictions on those left. Many politicians voting on the issue grew up during an era when pot smoking was common, although some deny taking part, as we found out when we surveyed members of the L.A. City Council.

That's because laws banning the oldest and most polluting diesel trucks from entering California ports take effect this month and next. Truckers complain that the new rules are too expensive, especially in a recession. But treating health problems caused by diesel soot may be even pricier.

Is California's Drought Over?
Recent winter storms filled California creeks and flooded streets, so the drought is pretty much over, right? Well, not quite. Experts say the state would need quite a few more weeks just like the last few to offset three years of relatively dry weather.

Badger Pass Celebrates 75 Years
Skiiers and snowboarders are loving the winter weather, and many are making a beeline for the Sierra. But in Yosemite last weekend, the state's oldest ski resort had something else to celebrate -- a 75th anniversary. Despite the cold outside, there were plenty of warm feelings for its white slopes and old timey feel.

In this age of pop-up ads and sales pitches texted to your cell phone, cardboard signs held on sidewalks by human hands seem like a throw back to a bygone era. And yet, changes are afoot in the world of sign holders.
