If at First You Don't Succeed...
Governor Schwarzenegger has resubmitted the nomination of Republican State Senator Abel Maldonado to be lieutenant governor, less than a week after the state Assembly rejected him. If Maldonado is eventually confirmed, he would become the highest ranking Latino Republican in California politics. You might think that would motivate Latino politicians to rally around him, but it was Latino Democrats in the State Assembly who led the charge against Maldonado. For more, we talk with Pilar Marrero who covers politics for the daily newspaper, "La Opinion."

Speedskating in Oakland
The Winter Olympics in Vancouver will no doubt inspire a new generation of athletes to strap on their skis, skates and snowboards in search of Olympic gold. They have plenty of California role models. On Thursday, J.R. Celski from Monterey won a bronze medal in short track speedskating, coming in right behind teammate Apolo Ohno. Short track speedskating is a kind of free-for-all on ice that features a pack of athletic skaters racing around a tiny track. The sport has a big following in California -- and not just among kids.

Invisible People
A former Hollywood insider is shifting his focus from celebrities to the homeless. Mark Horvath runs the website Invisiblepeople.tv. It's a collection of short video profiles of homeless people he's met across the country. The site has become a surprise hit on social media sites. What's even more surprising is that Horvath, a former TV executive, is now on the verge of homelessness himself.

A Miracle Washed Away
Something of a miracle emerged from last summer's Station Fire in Southern California. After the fire cooled, biologists stumbled upon a creek in the mountains near Los Angeles that was teeming with hundreds of endangered red-legged frogs. But winter storms and debris flows in the burn area may pose a deadly threat to the frogs.

A Fresh Idea for South Central L.A.
When First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off her campaign against childhood obesity last week, she made a point of saying it's a problem that disproportionately affects black and Latino kids. Part of the problem is that in many inner city neighborhoods, it's very hard to find grocery stores selling fresh, healthy produce. Youth Radio's King Anyi Howell visited a farmers market in South Central Los Angeles that's struggling to stay afloat in the urban sea of fast food chains and liquor marts.
