"Filth" In Processed Tomatoes Part of Fraud Case
A wide-ranging case of fraud in the processed tomato industry has been moving through the courts of California and New York. Three defendants went before a U.S. district judge in Sacramento yesterday. A former corporate purchasing manager for Safeway pleaded guilty to accepting bribes. The alleged mastermind of the tomato scheme, Frederick Scott Salyer, sits in Sacramento County Jail.
Jumping into the High-Risk Pool
Californians turned down by health insurers because of pre-existing conditions are expected to get coverage under the new health care law by early this summer. The final bill, signed by President Obama yesterday, sets aside $5 billion to fund so-called "high-risk pools" where the medically uninsurable will finally have a home.
