A new study finds that deaths from the misuse of prescription drugs have risen 360 percent over the last two decades. Most of the fatalities are from patients mixing their prescriptions with alcohol, street drugs or both. In the first half hour, we discuss what doctors can do to make sure drugs are taken properly. Then in the second half hour, we look at new data showing that some Bay Area beaches exceed pollution standards by as much as 50 percent. That’s according to a study from the Natural Resource Defense Council on the quality and pollution levels of the nation’s beaches.

Guests:

Dr. Michael Cohen, president of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (first half hour)

Dr. Joseph Guglielmo, chair of the department of clinical pharmacy at UCSF (first half hour)

Leslie Laudon, manager of the bonds section of the California State Water Resources Control Board (second half hour)

Noah Garrison, project attorney for the National Resources Defense Council, an environmental action group that focuses on issues such as pollution and global warming (second half hour)
