President George H.W. Bush was a modest man who wasn’t afraid to break from the Republican party or to compromise with opponents, according to historian Jon Meacham. “Destiny and Power,” Meacham’s new biography of the 41st president, includes criticism of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, who Bush says served his son George W. Bush poorly. The critical comments come at an awkward time for George H.W. Bush’s other son, Jeb, who continues to struggle in his bid to become the Republican presidential nominee.

Jon Meacham, presidential historian, author of "Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush"
