A projected 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in California are expected to apply for new driver’s licenses under a new law coming into effect Jan. 2. Advocates say this will make the roads safer, while critics say it provides a new incentive for immigrants to enter the country illegally. The Department of Motor Vehicles has been gearing up for the influx of new applicants.
