The state Legislature is considering a bill which would give California voters the option to repeal the state’s death penalty in 2012. We debate the proposal, which passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee on Thursday.

State Senator Loni Hancock, who authored the legislation, says it would save taxpayers billions of dollars. But opponents, including victims’ rights and law enforcement groups, say the death penalty is a critical and effective deterrent.
