The New Year is a mere two days old, but Californians are still feeling the aches of last year’s financial problems. Many retailers are reporting a dismal shopping season. The high-tech sector is hurting. The restaurant and hospitality business, Bay Area mainstays, are still waiting for the tourists to come back. Some are predicting that the Bay Area economy will recover by spring, others that it won’t come back until the end of the year. Today we begin a three-part series on the state and future of the Bay Area economy. We start in San Francisco with this report from KQED’s Cy Musiker.
