Live This Month: April 2014

Truth be told, a couple of the concerts highlighted this month are already sold out, but their inclusion here is meant to inspire you to do what it takes (hopefully just look on Craigslist?) to find tickets. One of those shows features Blood Orange, the latest project of Devonté Hynes. As a writer/producer, Hynes has worked with the likes of Sky Ferriera and Solange Knowles, and his acclaimed 2013 LP Cupid Deluxe is an enchanting and incredibly varied collection of weird pop songs. Also on the sold-out front: Future Islands. As we mentioned in our SXSW mixtape, the band was one of our Austin highlights, and the opportunity to see them at The Chapel is simply too good to miss. The song we’ve included here comes from Singles, the group’s latest collection of emotionally charged electronic pop.

As this mix shows, though, there are also plenty of great shows this month that aren’t sold out! On the local front, it’s been about two-and-a-half years since SF surf-pop band The She’s released their first full length, which makes the new Dreamers EP both anticipated and overdue. The band’s record release party is a four-band affair, and you should get there early to see Bay Bridged favorites Cocktails. Burnt Ones are also releasing a new album this month. Castle Face Records promises that Gift is the most psychedelic record yet from this SF band, and the song we’ve included, “Spell Breakers,” offers a hazy, sound collage-informed take on garage rock stomp.
