"content": "\u003cp>\u003cem>THE VETERAN REPORTER JOINS CO-HOST LILY JAMALI, AND WILL ANCHOR THE STATEWIDE NEWS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAM FROM LOS ANGELES\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>KQED announces the hiring of Saul Gonzalez as co-host of its premier statewide daily radio news program \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/program/the-california-reporthttps:/www.kqed.org/news/program/the-california-report\">\u003cem>The California Report\u003c/em>\u003c/a> (\u003cem>TCR\u003c/em>). An award-winning reporter who has spent his entire career in radio and television broadcast journalism, Gonzalez arrives at KQED from KCRW in Los Angeles, where he served as a reporter and producer, and also host of the popular podcast \u003cem>There Goes the Neighborhood\u003c/em>. Gonzalez starts July 8 and will report for \u003cem>TCR\u003c/em> from Los Angeles. \u003cem>TCR\u003c/em> co-host Lily Jamali will continue to report out of KQED’s headquarters in San Francisco.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We are fortunate to welcome someone with as much experience and range as a reporter and host as Saul has to \u003cem>The California Report\u003c/em>,” says KQED Chief Content Officer Holly Kernan. “His deep understanding of the issues that impact Southern California will complement Lily’s focus on Northern California, and will benefit listeners and partner stations throughout the state.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Gonzalez’s tenure at KCRW started in 2012. Since that time he's covered many of the critical issues facing Southern Californians, from soaring housing costs and homelessness to the plight of undocumented immigrants and people working in the underground economy. Gonzalez also hosted and co-produced the second season of the podcast series \u003cem>There Goes the Neighborhood\u003c/em> (co-produced by WNYC), which explored gentrification in Los Angeles. Since 2014, Gonzalez has also been a contributing reporter for the daily international news show \u003cem>The World,\u003c/em> produced by Public Radio International (PRI).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Before embarking on his radio career, Gonzalez worked in television for PBS in a series of roles, including the Los Angeles producer of The\u003cem> NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, \u003c/em>contributing reporter for the national magazine series \u003cem>Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, \u003c/em>producer for the KCET weekly magazine series \u003cem>California Connected\u003c/em> and\u003cem> SoCal Connected\u003c/em>, as well as KCET’s nightly news show \u003cem>Life & Times\u003c/em>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During his career, Gonzalez has covered wildfire preparedness in California, the culture clash over Islam in Europe, the economics and ethics of genetic testing, and the hunt to identify human rights abusers in Central America using forensic evidence. For his work, Saul's received nine Emmy and eleven Golden Mike awards for hard news and feature reporting. An award-winning reporter who has spent his entire career in radio and television broadcast journalism, Gonzalez arrives at KQED from KCRW in Los Angeles, where he served as a reporter and producer, and also host of the popular podcast \u003cem>There Goes the Neighborhood\u003c/em>. Gonzalez starts July 8 and will report for \u003cem>TCR\u003c/em> from Los Angeles. \u003cem>TCR\u003c/em> co-host Lily Jamali will continue to report out of KQED’s headquarters in San Francisco.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We are fortunate to welcome someone with as much experience and range as a reporter and host as Saul has to \u003cem>The California Report\u003c/em>,” says KQED Chief Content Officer Holly Kernan. “His deep understanding of the issues that impact Southern California will complement Lily’s focus on Northern California, and will benefit listeners and partner stations throughout the state.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Gonzalez’s tenure at KCRW started in 2012. Since that time he's covered many of the critical issues facing Southern Californians, from soaring housing costs and homelessness to the plight of undocumented immigrants and people working in the underground economy. Gonzalez also hosted and co-produced the second season of the podcast series \u003cem>There Goes the Neighborhood\u003c/em> (co-produced by WNYC), which explored gentrification in Los Angeles. She has a fresh perspective and creative approach that’s right in line with the direction we hope to take the weekend program.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“\u003cem>The California Report\u003c/em> is the only public radio show that brings a statewide perspective to this huge, diverse place,” said Khokha. “It allows listeners on the freeway in San Diego or brushing their teeth in San Francisco to hear stories from Fresno, Mendocino and Sacramento. It brings us the stories of real people, the intimacy of their voices, and helps knit together our diverse state.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After joining KQED in 2004, Sasha rose to Central Valley Bureau Chief for \u003cem>The California Report.\u003c/em> In that role she covered a vast geographic beat, including the nation’s most productive farm belt, some of California’s poorest towns, and Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. She reported on environmental justice issues, including air and water pollution, as well as bringing the lives and concerns of rural Californians to listeners across the state.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sasha’s reporting has helped expose the hidden price that immigrant women janitors and farmworkers may pay to keep their jobs: sexual assault at work. Her “Rape in the Fields” radio series, produced in collaboration with the Center for Investigative Reporting and UC Berkeley’s Investigative Reporting Program, helped change California law with regard to sexual harassment training for farm supervisors. Her work has also won a national PRNDI award for investigative reporting, as well as multiple prizes from the Radio Television News Directors Association and the Society for Professional Journalists.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sasha began her radio career in waterproof overalls filing stories about the salmon fishery at Raven Radio in Sitka, Alaska. Wage theft often goes unreported because employees are scared of getting fired. Last fall, Chinese immigrant workers at a San Francisco dim sum restaurant did something remarkable. They won $4 million in back pay – one of the biggest settlements of its kind. A fry cook who doesn’t speak English took the lead, and KQED’s \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/author/vinneetong\">Vinnee Tong\u003c/a> asked her how she did it, and what she hopes it means for other workers.\u003c/p>\n\u003ch4>L.A.
