And while not every member of his group agrees with all of Coulter's positions, he added, she is someone who \"should be listened to\" given the current national political context.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://twitter.com/berkeleyantifa/status/1196168559539310592?s=21\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Coulter was initially scheduled to speak on campus in April 2017, but later \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/11427970/reports-controversial-coulter-speech-at-uc-berkeley-cancelled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abruptly cancelled her appearance\u003c/a> after school administrators called off the event, citing safety concerns, and then offered an alternative date the following month.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[aside label=\"related coverage\" tag=\"ann-coulter\"]\"It’s sickening when a radical thuggish institution like Berkeley can so easily snuff out the cherished American right to free speech,\" Coulter said afterwards on Twitter. \"I’m very sad about Berkeley's cancellation (sic), but my sadness is greater than that. It is a dark day for free speech in America.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At the time, university police said they had received specific, credible threats related to Coulter's planned appearance. The cancellation of the event came after a series of violent clashes between far-right and far-left protesters, including a riot on campus before a scheduled Feb. 1 talk by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The university said it spent roughly $800,000 on security in preparation for the Coulter event, even though it never actually happened.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Berkeley College Republicans, along with the Tennessee-based Young America's Foundation, a conservative group, later \u003ca href=\"https://www.reuters.com/article/us-california-lawsuit-ucberkeley/uc-berkeley-settles-lawsuit-over-treatment-of-conservative-speakers-idUSKBN1O22K4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed suit against UC Berkeley\u003c/a> in federal court in San Francisco, accusing the school of violating the First Amendment by discriminating against speakers with conservative views.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a Dec. 2018 settlement with both groups, Cal agreed to modify its procedures for handling \"major events\" and to no longer charge \"security\" fees for certain activities, including lectures and speeches. The university also paid $70,000 to cover the groups' legal costs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We just hope that Ms. Coulter is able to speak, unlike what happened two years ago,\" Reddy said. He said the Berkeley College Republicans worked closely with campus police and Cal Performances in preparation for this event. All attendees will be required to pass through metal detectors and will only be allowed to take certain items inside, he said. Police also plan to set up barricades outside the event.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We believe these policies will help the event go smoother than some others in the past,” Reddy added, noting that his group has already received some threats. \"A disruption would be very unfavorable to our interests.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A number of leftist groups, comprised of both students and off-campus activists, remain hell-bent on shutting the event down.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We're calling on people from all around the Bay Area to come to Berkeley tomorrow to shut down Ann Coulter and the College Republicans speaking event,\" said Hoku Jeffrey, an organizer for the group By Any Means Necessary.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"The Coulter event is simply an invitation for white supremacist violence to happen on the Berkeley campus and in the surrounding community, and we don't we don't accept that at all.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://twitter.com/berkeleycrs/status/1195147703094665216?s=21\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The school is much better prepared to accommodate controversial events like this than it used to be, said UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof, noting that more than 15 high-profile conservative speakers have come to campus over the last two years, without major disruption or incident.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"That's largely because student organizations are now following to the letter and the spirit of the campus event policy,\" including extensive security assessments before each event, he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We have two priorities, two commitments, and we have an unwavering commitment to both,\" he added. “One is to support the First Amendment rights of our students regardless of their perspectives. And two is to provide for the safety and security of the members of the campus community, our guests and the public at large.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Nonetheless, the administration is not taking anything for granted, Mogulof added.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We're not complacent. You know, we do believe that we have the necessary preparations in place. But you never know. You can see all the profiles and news about this race \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/tag/ad15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here\u003c/a>.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It may seem like the ultimate waving of a white flag for Republicans in the liberal East Bay — the only GOP candidate running for State Assembly is a college sophomore.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Running a competitive race would be an uphill climb for any Republican, as only six percent of registered voters in the 15th district identify with the party.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So Pranav Jandhyala's experience as a Republican on the liberal campus of UC Berkeley may be the perfect precursor for what he faces in this race.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Being a Republican on campus has taught me a lot about resilience and perseverance,\" Jandhyala said. \"I've been like harassed, stalked as a member of the College Republicans, and if you don't stand up for your beliefs, you're sacrificing a lot more.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He added that threats are the least of what he's faced in the nearly two years he's been at Berkeley.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last February, \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2017/02/02/protest-forces-cancellation-of-milo-yiannopoulos-event-at-uc-berkeley/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a planned speech by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos sparked protests on campus\u003c/a>, and Jandhyala says he was attacked by demonstrators.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"They started beating me up with fists and sticks, and I was on the ground for maybe ten, twenty seconds,\" he said. \"It was the longest twenty seconds of my life.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The campus paper that Jandhyala edited, the Berkeley Patriot, was later criticized for attempting to bring Yiannopoulos back to campus last fall.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The campus protests pushed him to start BridgeUSA, a group that aims to unite political divisions on college campuses.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Political moderation is what Jandhyala sees as the path out of the woods for Republicans in the Bay Area. He points to GOP Assemblywoman \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/10348340/meet-catherine-baker-bay-areas-only-republican-assemblymember\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catharine Baker\u003c/a>, who has won election twice in the neighboring 16th district (where Democrats have a registration advantage), as a model.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jandhyala says the value Republicans in this region should espouse is \"practicality.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's looking at issues rationally and not being so quick to emotion,\" he added.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jandhyala applauded the Republicans in the Assembly, including Baker, who worked with the Democratic majority on environmental legislation last year. He also thinks Republicans can run in this region on criminal justice issues.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I'm for rehabilitation. I want to be smart on crime, but also tough on crime,\" said Jandhyala, who believes the latter value could even draw support in liberal Berkeley. \"I can't tell you how many times I've heard a friend tell me they're scared to walk to class or scared to walk home.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But while Baker has fought off Democratic challengers in the more purple Tri-Valley area, the \"R\" next to Jandhyala's name on the ballot is likely to be a scarlet letter to voters in Oakland and Berkeley. Democrats have a 60-point registration advantage in the 15th district.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At the very least, Jandhyala hopes to put his Democratic opponents through some intellectual sparring before one of them likely heads off to the (slightly) more politically divided Capitol. At forums, he's been the lone voice on stage pushing back against issues that unite the rest of the field, such as support for single-payer healthcare.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I want to be able to challenge that,\" he said. \"I want to give voters who might not believe in this Democratic status quo an option.\"\u003c/p>\n\n",

You can see all the profiles and news about this race \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/tag/ad15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here\u003c/a>.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It may seem like the ultimate waving of a white flag for Republicans in the liberal East Bay — the only GOP candidate running for State Assembly is a college sophomore.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Running a competitive race would be an uphill climb for any Republican, as only six percent of registered voters in the 15th district identify with the party.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So Pranav Jandhyala's experience as a Republican on the liberal campus of UC Berkeley may be the perfect precursor for what he faces in this race.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Being a Republican on campus has taught me a lot about resilience and perseverance,\" Jandhyala said. \"I've been like harassed, stalked as a member of the College Republicans, and if you don't stand up for your beliefs, you're sacrificing a lot more.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He added that threats are the least of what he's faced in the nearly two years he's been at Berkeley.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last February, \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2017/02/02/protest-forces-cancellation-of-milo-yiannopoulos-event-at-uc-berkeley/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a planned speech by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos sparked protests on campus\u003c/a>, and Jandhyala says he was attacked by demonstrators.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"They started beating me up with fists and sticks, and I was on the ground for maybe ten, twenty seconds,\" he said. \"It was the longest twenty seconds of my life.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The campus paper that Jandhyala edited, the Berkeley Patriot, was later criticized for attempting to bring Yiannopoulos back to campus last fall.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The campus protests pushed him to start BridgeUSA, a group that aims to unite political divisions on college campuses.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Political moderation is what Jandhyala sees as the path out of the woods for Republicans in the Bay Area. He points to GOP Assemblywoman \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/10348340/meet-catherine-baker-bay-areas-only-republican-assemblymember\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catharine Baker\u003c/a>, who has won election twice in the neighboring 16th district (where Democrats have a registration advantage), as a model.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jandhyala says the value Republicans in this region should espouse is \"practicality.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's looking at issues rationally and not being so quick to emotion,\" he added.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jandhyala applauded the Republicans in the Assembly, including Baker, who worked with the Democratic majority on environmental legislation last year. He also thinks Republicans can run in this region on criminal justice issues.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I'm for rehabilitation. I want to be smart on crime, but also tough on crime,\" said Jandhyala, who believes the latter value could even draw support in liberal Berkeley. \"I can't tell you how many times I've heard a friend tell me they're scared to walk to class or scared to walk home.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But while Baker has fought off Democratic challengers in the more purple Tri-Valley area, the \"R\" next to Jandhyala's name on the ballot is likely to be a scarlet letter to voters in Oakland and Berkeley. Democrats have a 60-point registration advantage in the 15th district.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At the very least, Jandhyala hopes to put his Democratic opponents through some intellectual sparring before one of them likely heads off to the (slightly) more politically divided Capitol. At forums, he's been the lone voice on stage pushing back against issues that unite the rest of the field, such as support for single-payer healthcare.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I want to be able to challenge that,\" he said. \"I want to give voters who might not believe in this Democratic status quo an option.\"\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

On Wednesday, UC Berkeley officials added that they were willing to look into the availability of campus buildings that require a rental fee.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>BCR did not immediately respond to UC Berkeley’s email, but on Wednesday they put out a \u003ca href=\"http://www.yaf.org/news/berkeley-blocks-ben-shapiro/\">press release\u003c/a> with the\u003ca href=\"http://www.yaf.org/\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Young America’s Foundation\u003c/span>\u003c/a> that said, “Berkeley blocks Ben Shapiro.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Since then, UC Berkeley decided to look into alternative venues for Shapiro’s appearance.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We decided not to wait for their response, so we went ahead and checked on those venues regardless,” campus spokesman Dan Mogulof said Thursday in an interview with KQED. “And we’ve determined that there are other venues available.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mogulof added that the university will help underwrite the cost of a venue that requires a rental fee.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>California Republican Party leader Harmeet Dhillon -- also a member of the Republican National Committee and a lawyer representing the Berkeley College Republicans in a lawsuit against UC Berkeley -- told KQED Thursday that she and the student members of BCR were not notified by the university that Shapiro will be able to speak, but that they found out through KQED.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I really only wish the university would just communicate with us directly rather than leaking emails to the press and doing it in the media,” Dhillon said. “That’s just not productive.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/888138193370963968\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On Twitter Thursday, Shapiro echoed Dhillon’s sentiment, saying, “Neither I nor YAF have heard from Berkeley, nor have College Republicans.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Let’s hope Berkeley keeps their word,” he added.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Shapiro is the latest in a series of controversial right-wing speakers to be invited to Berkeley’s campus.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In April, BCR invited Ann Coulter to speak, but campus \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2017/04/26/reports-controversial-coulter-speech-at-uc-berkeley-cancelled/\">officials refused to host her\u003c/a>, citing safety concerns.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[contextly_sidebar id=\"i7tGts2uLkrWK8o4MjVmN9yZkYw9U4ys\"]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In February, a scheduled appearance by Milo Yiannopoulos \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2017/02/01/milo-yiannopoulos-event-at-uc-berkeley-canceled/\">was canceled\u003c/a> after protests broke out outside where he was supposed to speak.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Shapiro is a former Breitbart News editor, who now heads up \u003ca href=\"http://www.dailywire.com/\">DailyWire.com\u003c/a>, an online right-wing publication.
