In response to a growing number of heroin and prescription drug overdoses, more than 20 states including California have changed their laws to allow all sorts of people other than health care providers to step in and prevent a possible death with an antidote called naloxone. A number of East Coast police departments have equipped officers with naloxone, but that idea has been slower to catch on here in California, except in San Diego County.
