The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday morning that MUNI is about to pass its overtime budget by $18 million this year, a 55 percent cost overrun.
Muni needs 1,491 operators to provide daily service to the approximately 700,000 people who ride Muni daily, according to numbers from SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose. But the Chronicle reports that about 300 operators are no-show on almost any given day. That leaves Muni with a bad choice: either cut routes or use operators at time-and-a-half.
At the same time transit officials announced that the Powell-Mason cable car line will be shut down "until further notice" as of today, with Muni buses taking the route.
