San Francisco restaurant Slanted Door won the equivalent of a foodie Oscar — the James Beard Foundation Award — for the nation's best restaurant on Monday, May 5. The award is equivalent to a Best Picture Award, celebrating the restaurant as a whole. Chef Charles Phan is no stranger to the Beard awards, as he won Best Chef in 2004. Still, as the Slanted Door gets ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary he's pleased at the recognition of his team, Vietnamese food and the restaurant's style. "Hopefully, it’ll inspire the next generation of chefs," Phan said. "I think you always have a shot at presenting your life and your culture to the world." (Wendy Goodfriend/KQED)
