The San Francisco Fire Department has issued a preliminary report on the massive, five-alarm fire that destroyed an under-construction, 172-unit Mission Bay apartment complex March 11. The report said the fire has been ruled "unintentional," ignited by a "hot or smoldering object" between the top floor and the roof of the building. The estimated monetary damage is $40 million.
Two firefighters were injured in the blaze: one who suffered first-and-second-degree burns to the face and hands, and a battalion chief who sprained an ankle.
Fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said a more detailed investigative report will be issued in coming weeks.
