Waterfalls along the McCloud River Falls Trail in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Fed by deep springs and snowmelt from Mt. Shasta, the river is one of the places chronicled in the book Places We Swim California. The summer is here and that means plenty of people in California will be looking to cool off to get some relief from the hot weather. An easy way to do that is finding a place to swim.

While the state is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, many of the state’s best water experiences are often off the beaten path. Dillon Seitchik-Reardon and Caroline Clements co-wrote the book “Places We Swim California,” in which they explore dozens of unique swimming holes in the state.

The couple and their son drove around for six months, reducing their list of 400 or so places down to 60 and going to all of them. They swam in the spots, sometimes going back again and again because the weather wasn’t right or there were fires or floods. Seitchik-Reardon said the hope was to find the most beautiful places, in the most incredible, awe-inspiring places that presented a clear snapshot of the wilderness and outdoors.
